Humans of Bombay founder - Karishma Mehta recently filed a suit in the Delhi High Court claiming copyright infringement by People of India (POI) for following a similar model like Humans of Bombay (HOB). On 18th September the Hon’ble Bench comprising Justice Pratibha M. Singh, issued a notice to the Defendants. However no interim relief has been granted yet.
Here is a complete rundown of Humans of Bombay Controversy involving founder Karishma Mehta, Humans of New York founder Brandon Stanton and the channel - Poeple of India (POI).
The row has garnered speed in media and Ms. Mehta is being criticized for hypocrisy. Stanton, founder of ‘Human of New York’ recently wrote on X (Twitter) that HOB can be considered a rip-off of his page, but since HOB seemed to be promoting community building, Stanton let it run. But now he insists that HOB has become a business like any other.

HOB is facing severe backlash as well for its actions, with people criticizing the, almost advertisement-like shape it has taken in recent years.
While Mehta came out and thanked Stanton on X (formerly Twitter), she urged the nation to wait for the verdict of the court and let law take its own course.

It remains to be seen how the court will see the matter and whether, private IP will win against the larger public good, this time around.

Yet another case to prove the fact that any content on internet is open-source from the time it is published. While this might pick up steam for HOB for a while, this business model can't last forever.
